The AI War No One Talks About.
And your favorite Referral Radar is back again!

Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.
The internet is under siege—but not in the way you think. AI web crawlers are running rampant, draining sites of data, ignoring the rules, and even crashing servers.
Open-source developers have had enough, and their counterattacks? Let’s just say they’re getting wild.
Before we dive in, here’s a quick one: We love bringing you the best AI insights straight to your inbox—for free!
But here’s the thing: keeping this newsletter free takes work... and, well, money. That’s where our amazing sponsors come in.

🥊 Traps, Tricks, and Pure Spite: How Devs Are Waging War on AI Bots.

AI has changed, and is still changing the game—no doubt about that. We get AI-generated art, instant chat responses, and smarter tools, all thanks to advanced AI models.
But while most people enjoy the benefits, others are paying the price—especially open-source developers, whose sites are getting swarmed, battered, and sometimes completely knocked offline by aggressive AI web crawlers.
These bots, designed to hoard data for AI training, don’t play fair.
They ignore robots.txt (the internet’s polite way of saying, "stay out") bombard websites with traffic—sometimes to the point of crashing them entirely.
The worst part? Many of these AI scrapers operate in the shadows, disguising themselves, hopping between IPs, and pretending to be human users.
Honestly, this isn’t just a nuisance anymore—it’s digital warfare, and developers are done playing nice.
Just last week, Cloudflare—one of the biggest defenders against AI crawlers—launched AI Labyrinth, a tool designed to trap, confuse, slow down, and waste AI crawlers’ resources by feeding them irrelevant content instead of the real thing.
But independent developers? They’ve gone even further.
Take Xe Iaso, for example. After AmazonBot nearly DDoS’d their Git server into oblivion, Iaso created Anubis—a tool that forces bots to solve a proof-of-work challenge before accessing a website.
If you’re human? You pass the test and get greeted by a cute anime drawing of Anubis. if you’re proven otherwise? Well, good luck getting in.
And it doesn’t stop there. Other devs are taking even more extreme, ingenious, and sometimes hilarious measures such as:
Blocking entire countries. Yep, Brazil and China have already been cut off from some projects just to stop AI bot traffic.
Feeding AI bots "poisonous" data—like fake articles on the benefits of drinking bleach or how catching measles improves your love life—all to make AI models dumber instead of smarter.
Deploying traps like Nepenthes, a tool that ensnares AI crawlers in endless loops of fake content and dead-end links, wasting their time and resources.
But will this stop the AI scrapers or the companies behind them?
The truth is, AI-powered web crawlers aren’t going anywhere.
AI companies—whether it’s OpenAI, Google, or the next big startup trying to train its next groundbreaking model need data. Lots of it.
And unless they start playing fair (which, let’s be honest, isn’t looking likely), developers will have no choice but to keep fighting back with creativity, tech, and a whole lot of spite.
For now, it’s a cat-and-mouse game. But one thing’s for sure: developers aren’t going down without a fight.

🚨 Leaked Data Uncovers China’s AI-Powered Censorship Machine!

A sophisticated AI censorship system built to flag sensitive content in China has been exposed in a leaked dataset, revealing how large language models (LLMs) are being weaponized for state repression.
From complaints about rural poverty to reports on government corruption and cries for help about police extortion, the system scans and censors thousands of topics deemed politically sensitive by the Chinese government.
TechCrunch uncovered 133,000 examples used to train this AI system, proving that China’s censorship now extends far beyond banned keywords like "Tiananmen Square massacre".
Instead, it uses AI-powered deep learning to detect and suppress subtle dissent—a massive leap forward in automated state surveillance.
🚔 AI-Powered Censorship in Action
This system doesn’t just block overtly political content. It identifies and prioritizes censorship of hot-button issues like:
Pollution and food safety scandals
Financial fraud and labor disputes
Political satire and historical analogies about leadership
Military movements and Taiwan-related discussions
Even Chinese idioms are flagged! A simple proverb like "When the tree falls, the monkeys scatter"—hinting at power shifts—gets instantly targeted for removal.
The dataset, found on an unsecured Baidu-hosted server, confirms that an unnamed LLM was trained to automatically detect and report "sensitive" content across social media, news, and forums.
🛑 The Bigger Picture: AI and Digital Repression
Experts warn that AI-driven censorship is evolving, making government control over online discussions smarter and more scalable.
Unlike older censorship methods that simply block words, these new AI models can detect nuanced criticism, adapt to new speech patterns, and continuously improve over time.
This revelation follows OpenAI’s recent report that Chinese entities were caught using AI to track anti-government posts and smear dissidents.
With China’s AI models like DeepSeek rising in prominence, the world is now witnessing a dangerous blend of AI innovation and authoritarian control.
China’s "public opinion work"—a phrase used by state agencies for censorship and propaganda—is reaching a new level of sophistication. As AI tech advances, so does its potential for repression.
