I was talking to my wife today about how ultimately, our job as parents are to equip our kids to make high-quality decisions. I said to her that as their world becomes more complex with more stress and responsibilities as they grow up, the one thing as parents we can do is to help them through the process of making those high quality decisions. This way, when they are ultimately out of the house and in the world themselves, they have that ability to make sound decisions.

But what is a high quality decision?

In the Army, we learned to make decisions despite the lack of information, or fog of war. There are a few aspects to this.

  • Making decisions with incomplete information

  • Understanding what information is important, and what is not.

  • Understanding what information to gather.

  • Holding off a decision until the last minute, to gather as much information as possible

  • Making a decision that’s optimal for that moment

  • Having the maturity to not looking backwards at faulting that decision, if it was a poor one.

  • Having the discipline to want to understand and analyse decision-making process.

  • Separating the decision-making process with the result.

Decision-making is not so easy, is it?
