🍾 xAI Launches Grok API: What You Need to Know!

Elon Musk’s xAI has finally released the much-anticipated API for its Grok model, but it's starting small.
The xAI API offers just one model, "grok-beta," with a price tag of $5 per million input tokens (equivalent to around 750,000 words) or $15 per million output tokens.
However, it's a bit of a mystery what Grok model "grok-beta" actually is.
Grok 2 is the latest version on X, but the API's documentation mentions Grok 2 and Grok mini, a lightweight and more affordable version of Grok, so there might be a technical hiccup.

So, what's in it for you with this API?
It supports function calling, which connects Grok models to external tools such as databases and search engines; however, they don’t appear to be live yet.
The documentation also suggests that there are vision models in the pipeline capable of analyzing both text and images.
But be aware that some users on X have reported issues when trying to pay for usage credits.
Hopefully, that has been ironed out to give you a seamless experience.
Grok has become a significant part of the X experience. Its “rebellious streak " allows it to answer spicy questions other AIs shy away from.
It also dabbles in summarizing news and trending events (albeit with some errors) and may enhance X’s search capabilities, account bios, post analytics, and reply functions in the future.
Plus, thanks to its integration with the open image generator Flux, Grok can create images on X without guardrails.
These efforts align with xAI's push to keep up with formidable competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic in the generative AI race.
Could xAI’s Grok be the next AI disruptor? Time will tell.🤷♀️

⚖️ News Corp Takes Legal Action Against Perplexity!

News Corp, the parent company of The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, is taking on Perplexity.
According to a lawsuit filed Monday, News Corp accuses Perplexity of snatching up news articles, opinions, and analyses “on a massive scale” and repackaging them as AI-generated responses without permission.
But just in case you’re wondering, Perplexity is an AI startup that pulls content from across the web to provide quick answers to user questions.
While it’s great for users who want to skip the whole search process and get straight to the info, it’s not so great for publishers like News Corp, who argue that shortcuts like this only drive away readers—and, more importantly, revenue.
But it gets worse; News Corp isn’t just upset about some borrowed phrases here and there.
They also allege that Perplexity straight-up copies content word-for-word, sometimes misattributed stories, and even made up fake ones with News Corp's name on them.
And get this:
In an attempt to handle things quietly, News Corp had sent Perplexity a letter back in July to address this “unauthorized use” situation.
But guess what? Perplexity didn’t even bother to reply. So, lawsuit it is!
The thing is, Perplexity’s no stranger to these accusations.
Wired, Forbes, and The New York Times have also called them out for scraping content and even dodging paywalls.
In fact, just last week, the Times sent them a cease-and-desist letter.
Sure, Perplexity has started paying some publishers (like Time and Fortune) for their content, but News Corp clearly didn’t make that VIP list.
Now, they’re seeking court intervention to stop Perplexity from using their content and to destroy any database where their work is stored.
This conflict highlights the never-ending battle over AI's use of online content.
Unlike competitors like OpenAI, which has secured permission to use these news outlets' content, Perplexity's next steps remain uncertain.
However, following in OpenAI's footsteps will depend on Perplexity’s financial capabilities.
If OpenAI had to dig deep to secure those permissions and partnerships, Perplexity might need to brace itself for some tough times ahead.
