Welcome Automaters!
Imagine writing a book… then waking up to find an AI trained on it.
Now imagine a judge saying, “That’s allowed.”
Well, that just happened — and while it might not sound huge at first, it could totally reshape how AI learns, creates, and borrows from the web forever.
We’re talking books, pirates, and a court ruling that could flip the entire game. Trust me, you’re gonna want the tea on this one. ☕
Here's what we have for you today
👨⚖️ Anthropic Beats Copyright Lawsuit

So… a U.S. federal judge just sided with Anthropic (aka the folks behind Claude) over its use of published books to train AI — without the authors’ consent. 😮
The reason? It's being considered fair use.
Yep, that tricky little corner of the copyright law that’s super outdated (like, 1976-outdated) but still used to decide whether copying something without permission is okay in certain cases.
And in this case, the fair use doctrine — the same one that lets you make memes, parodies, or write “Star Wars” fanfic (as long as you’re not selling it) — worked in Anthropic’s favor.
Now here’s why this matters:
It’s the first time a court has sided with an AI company using fair use to justify training on copyrighted data.
Before now, the fair use argument was kind of a gamble. But now? It’s got teeth.
And that’s a huge deal...
Because right now, authors, artists, and publishers are suing just about everyone — OpenAI, Meta, Google, Midjourney, you name it — over this exact issue.
So while this isn’t a final “everyone-can-do-it” stamp of approval, it does set the tone for how future cases might unfold — and it definitely tips the scale in Big Tech’s favor.
But hold up — Anthropic isn’t totally off the hook.
Turns out, they didn’t just “accidentally” use the books. They allegedly set out to build a “forever library” of every book in existence — and downloaded millions of those books from pirate sites. Yikes!
And that part, my friends… is still very much illegal.
So while the AI training part got a pass, the court is still moving forward with a trial over:
How they got the books (a.k.a. the pirated content)
Whether they owe damages for using that pirated content
In short:
AI companies just scored a legit court win lean on.
Fair use just got a whole lot stronger as a defense
And creatives? They're in for a long, messy fight

🤖 DeepMind Levels Up Robot Autonomy

Google DeepMind just dropped something kinda major: a new AI model called Gemini Robotics On-Device.
And yep, the name says it all—it runs directly on robots, allowing them perform tasks locally without needing an internet connection.
Here’s what actually makes it cool:
It’s smarter than your average offline bot: This model is basically a local version of DeepMind’s earlier Gemini Robotics release from March—and according to Google, it performs almost as well as the cloud version.
It runs fully offline-- so the robots can fold clothes or unzip bags without calling back to a data center.
You can control it using plain ol’ natural language: Just tell the robot what to do—in English (or any supported language)—and it listens.
But the best part? It actually does useful stuff.
In demos, Google showed robots doing tasks like unzipping bags and folding clothes. But it goes deeper—this model also learned to adapt to different robots and new, never-seen-before scenarios, like:
The bi-arm Franka FR3, which handled unexpected industrial assembly tasks.
Apptronik’s Apollo humanoid robot, which also got in on the action.
Oh—and there's a developer-friendly SDK, too.
Google released a brand-new Gemini Robotics SDK, letting devs train robots by showing them just 50 to 100 demonstrations using the MuJoCo physics simulator.
And in case you’re wondering—Google’s not alone in this robot race:
Nvidia is building out AI foundations for humanoid robots.
Hugging Face is diving into robotics datasets and even building their own bots.
RLWRLD (a Korean startup backed by Mirae Asset) is also deep into creating foundational models for robots.
So yeah... the race is officially on—and now the bots don’t even need Wi-Fi to keep up.
