šŸ¤Æ LinkedIn's AI Data Scraping Scandal!

LinkedIn is the latest social media company found to be processing its users' data without asking for consent and, worse, without updating its terms.

For its U.S. users, the platform has an opt-out toggle on their settings screen, which discloses that LinkedIn scrapes personal data to train ā€œcontent creation AI models.ā€

While this toggle isnā€™t new, the issue is that LinkedIn initially didnā€™t refresh its privacy policy to reflect the data use.

And normally, that should have happened before a big change, like using user data for a new purpose like this.

But don't worry ā€” The privacy policy has now been updated!

To opt out of LinkedInā€™s data scraping, go to the ā€œData Privacyā€ section of the LinkedIn settings, click on ā€œData for Generative AI improvement,ā€ and switch off the ā€œUse my data for training content creation AI modelsā€ option.

You can also opt-out via this form, but note that any opt-out you choose will not affect training that has already taken place.

Oh, and guess what else: This only happened in the U.S., not the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, likely due to stricter data privacy rules in those regions.

So, what models is LinkedIn training?

In a Q&A, the company said it is training its own models, including those for writing suggestions and posting recommendations.

But here's the kickerā€”LinkedIn's generative AI models may be trained by ā€œanother provider,ā€ like its corporate parent, Microsoft.

We hope those models are worth the ruckus this move made for the company.
