Welcome Automaters, 👋

So the tech world just delivered the kind of petty corporate drama we live for.

Google tried to play hardball with schools this week, and DuckDuckGo materialized out of nowhere to snatch the crown, serve some piping-hot truth, and offer an escape hatch. If you thought tech giants were above holding classrooms hostage, think again.

Here’s the exact tea on how the great K-12 AI standoff is playing out.

On Tuesday, Google dropped a bombshell on schools that sounds less like a software update and more like an ultimatum:

  • Schools can officially turn off Gemini. (Generous, right?)

  • But here’s the catch: If schools dare try to shut off Google’s other AI features, they lose Google Search entirely.

Let that sink in. Google currently dominates the student ecosystem, anchoring 50 million Chromebooks and serving over 150 million users globally via Google Classroom. Tethering mandatory AI directly to the core search engine isn't just aggressive; it is a full-scale digital hostage situation.

Naturally, DuckDuckGo saw this power play, adjusted its virtual sunglasses, and immediately entered the chat.

Now, in case you didn't know, DuckDuckGo has built its entire personality on protecting user privacy by limiting data collection. Seeing Google hand them an open goal on a silver platter? Absolute cinema.

  • Gabriel Weinberg, CEO and founder of DuckDuckGo, took to X to point schools straight toward their switch-your-default-search guides, casually dropping a cinematic: "Get in touch for help."

  • Kamyl Bazbaz, the company’s chief public affairs officer, didn't bother sugarcoating it. He fired off a fiery statement: "Forcing AI on school children: how a monopolist behaves when they think people are powerless. Prove Google wrong."

In an email to TechCrunch, DuckDuckGo kept the pressure on, pointing out the obvious truth: Google could easily untangle Search from AI if it actually wanted to.

This whole debacle is happening while the broader public is having a massive, collective existential crisis over AI. I mean, just look at the midterm election results. (we’ll be touching more on that below).

Now, to be completely fair, DuckDuckGo isn't standing on a soapbox shouting that all AI is evil. They actually offer their own suite of features, including a chat interface called Duck.ai and an AI search assistant.

The major difference? Unlike Google, they actually respect boundaries.

  • DuckDuckGo lets users completely disable AI features across both search and browser settings.

  • They even set up a dedicated hub at noai.duckduckgo.com where AI-assisted answers, generated images, and feature suggestions can be nuked into oblivion.

That flexibility is paying off in a major way. Earlier this year, the company reported a 30% spike in app installs as users actively rebelled against being force-fed AI search features.

So yeah, when a tech giant tries to bully the classroom, a witty alternative with a good privacy policy is bound to steal the spotlight.

Here’s your usual breakdown in visuals.

💪 The Great AI Backlash: How Voters Just Slammed the Brakes on Data Centers

If you thought AI was an unstoppable juggernaut, grab your coffee, because voters just pulled the plug on the party.  In fact, Tuesday night's midterm elections turned out to be an absolute bloodbath for data centers, and Wall Street is currently in full-blown panic mode.

Here’s the juicy rundown on how neighborhood grumbles turned into a full-scale political earthquake.

Again, if you thought people only voted on taxes and traffic, think again. Data centers were on 45 ballot measures across 10 states, and opponents of the massive server farms swept the board.

  • Out of those measures, 33 passed and another six are projected to win, ranging from outright bans to strict energy caps and mandatory public approval hearings.

  • In Ohio, home to a staggering 258 data centers, voters revolted completely. In cities like Urbana and Hubbard, outright bans crushed at the polls with 76% to 77% of the vote.

  • In Georgia, Atlanta has been the hottest data center construction market in the entire nation, but Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the gubernatorial contest, ending more than two decades of Republican control, and is set to put the brakes on fast-tracked permits.

  • Even in deep-red Texas, which accounts for about a quarter of all upcoming U.S. data center capacity, voters ousted three decades of Republican leadership, signaling a massive shift in what locals will tolerate.

As tech billionaire Elon Musk dramatically sighed on social media post-election, "Data centres in space looking pretty appealing right now."  (Honestly, Elon? Space might be your only option left!)

So Why Is Everyone Turning On Big Tech?

Let’s be real: data centers are loud, thirsty for water, power-hungry monsters, and terrible neighbors. Residents are sick of seeing their utility bills spike, their night skies polluted by blinding security lights, and local tax incentives handed out for facilities that barely create any jobs.

Voters clearly had enough. According to NBC exit polls, 56% of voters said AI and data centers played a crucial or major factor in how they cast their congressional ballots.

Unsurprisingly, the stock market threw a collective tantrum on Wednesday as the election results rolled in.

  • U.S. infrastructure darlings took a massive hit: Core Scientific slid 11.6%, Iren tumbled 12.5%, and firms like Applied Digital, Hut 8, and Cipher Digital plunged alongside power giants like GE Vernova and Constellation Energy.

  • Meanwhile, chipmakers in Asia took sympathetic hits, and high-flying AI stocks are wobbling over fresh fears of overcapacity and heavy spending.

So What Happens Next?

Is this the total death of the AI boom? Not so fast. Wall Street analysts are already splitting into two camps over what this drama actually means for your portfolio:

  • Scenario A (The Delay): Analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate these state-level victories could temporarily freeze up to 45% of planned U.S. data center capacity. Big projects, like Nvidia's massive 10-gigawatt initiative in Ohio, are now facing serious regulatory hurdles.

  • Scenario B (The Plot Twist): Other market insiders argue this isn't a collapse in AI demand, just a messy pivot. Data centers might simply migrate to more tech-friendly states, or adapt to tougher environmental oversight. Some hedge fund managers even view the recent 8% dip in the Nasdaq as the ultimate "buy the dip" moment!

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Anthropic as it prepares for its upcoming IPO. Despite shrinking its third-quarter net losses and pulling in a staggering $16.96 billion in quarterly revenue, slowing growth rates combined with this election chaos mean tech investors are in for a wild ride.

The Bottom Line:

Whether this means a permanent speed bump for the AI revolution or just a brief timeout for greedy developers remains to be seen. But one thing is crystal clear: everyday Americans just proved they’re not about to let tech giants turn their hometowns into humming, water-guzzling server vaults without a fight.

In all, Big Tech built the future, but they forgot to ask the neighbors first. Now, the neighbors hold all the power!

A Single Typo Shouldn’t Cost You a Sale

A shopper types “running shos” and gets nothing back. Another types “red waterprof trail runners under $150” and hits the same wall. Both knew what they wanted.

Traditional site search relies on exact keyword matching, leaving shoppers stranded at “0 results found” screens.

Gladly understands what shoppers mean, typos and all. Instead of a dead end, they get products that fit what they asked for and a conversation that keeps them shopping.

🤖 AI Workout Of The Day: The Lazy Guide to Saving Token Credits Without Losing Quality

When using "Heavy Use" tools with expensive tokens, don't just give them a task. Give them your Constraints.

This keeps the AI from wasting "Heavy Use" credits on a path you didn't want.

💡 Prompts to Try:

Execute [Task] with a strict focus on [Specific Outcome]. While working, explicitly avoid the following common pitfall(s): [Common Pitfall]

Do not default to generic advice, unnecessary background, or speculative assumptions unless I explicitly ask for them.

Break the task into clear, logical steps and explain your reasoning briefly at each stage so I can track progress without information overload.

When you reach approximately 50% completion, pause immediately and present:

 1. A short summary of what’s been completed
 2. What remains
 3. Any assumptions you’re about to make

Ask me for a “checkpoint approval” before continuing.

Do not proceed past this point until approval is given.

If constraints conflict at any time, prioritize [Specific Outcome] over speed, creativity, or verbosity.
