ā California Governor Vetoes AI Safety Bill!
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently vetoed the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier AI Models Act (SB 1047), which would have regulated AI companies in the state.
The bill targeted AI models costing over $100 million to train or over $10 million to fine-tune, requiring safety measures like a "kill switch," testing protocols, protections for whistleblowers, and more.
However, it faced backlash from industry players like OpenAI, The Chamber of Progress representing Amazon, Meta, and Google, which argued that it would hinder innovation.
Well, now, it seems this is the end of the bill!
Governor Newsom's veto message listed several factors for his decision, such as the burden the bill would have placed on AI companies and Californiaās lead in the space.
He also critiqued the bill as too broad and that it might stifle innovation by imposing strict standards.
According to him, smaller, specialized models could be as dangerous as larger systems targeted by SB 1047, and the bill could mislead the public into believing that AI risks are fully under control.
But it's important to note that Newsom is not completely against the bill on the front!
The Governor does agree that safety protocols, guardrails, and clear and enforceable consequences for bad actors should be in place.
However, he doesnāt believe the state should āsettle for a solution not informed by an empirical trajectory analysis of Al systems and capabilities.ā

š Uninstall Microsoftās āRecallā In Minutes ā Hereās how!
Microsoft has decided to give Windows 11 users with Copilot+ PCs some peace of mindāor at least a way to completely ditch the controversial Recall feature!
And yes, this time, itās for real! Definitely not another "Oops, that was a bug" situation we had before.
But in case you missed the drama, Recall is an AI-powered tool that quietly takes snapshots of your device activity and makes them searchable.
However, it didnāt exactly win any popularity contests when it was first revealed, much to Microsoftās surprise (or dismay).
In fact, Privacy experts and users alike were pretty freaked out about the whole idea.
After hitting pause on the rollout, Microsoft decided to give it another shot, but this time, with one big change: Allowing users the choice to kick it to the curb entirely if they want.
When Recall officially arrives on Copilot+ PCs in November, it will be strictly opt-in (no sneaky background stuff) and, more importantly, fully removable.
Hereās how to:
Just head to the āTurn Windows features on and offā menu (a quick taskbar search will get you there), uncheck the box next to Recall, and boomāit's gone.
Youāll need to restart your PC, but once thatās done, Recall and all its processes will be wiped clean!
Yep! Privacy buffs can breathe a sigh of reliefāand maybe get a better nightās sleep knowing no oneās tracking their late-night Netflix binge.š
Smart move by Microsoft, right? Honestly, itās probably for the best.
Whether Recall sticks around long-term depends on how well Microsoft can convince users itās useful and secure.
But for now, if the idea of an AI-powered feature that tracks your every move gives you the creeps, saying goodbye to Recall is just a few clicks away.
