🆕 An Experiment to Challenge Midjourney's AI Stereotypes.

In a thought-provoking experiment, Arsenii Alenichev aimed to challenge AI stereotypes. He prompted Midjourney to create images of Black African doctors helping white kids.

He typed sentences like:

  • "Black African doctors providing care for white suffering children"

  • "Traditional African healer is helping poor and sick white children"

Shockingly, despite specific requests, Midjourney almost always depicted the children as Black, with only 22 white doctors out of 350+ images. (see images)

They tried tweaking requests, this time entering phrases that mentioned Black African doctors providing food, vaccines, or medicine to white children who were poor or suffering.

They also asked for images depicting different health scenarios like "HIV patients receiving care."

Try as they might, the team was unable to get Black doctors and white patients in one image.

Out of 150 images of HIV patients, 148 were Black, and two were white.

This experiment highlights a big issue:

AI isn't neutral, it inherits biases from its training data. It's a challenge that extends beyond healthcare imagery; AI can perpetuate biases in various fields.

So, can we untangle these biases from AI? That's the million-dollar question.
