🗣️ Meta: Why you see what you see on Facebook and Instagram

Meta has published an in-depth explanation of its social media algorithms to demystify how content is recommended for Instagram and Facebook users.

In a blog post, the company provided us with 22 "service cards" that offer:

  • Information about how AI systems rank content.

  • The predictions each system makes to determine what content might be most relevant to users.

  • The controls/tools users can use to help customize their experience.

And the best part? The “ Service cards” cover everything from your Feed to Stories, Reels and other surfaces where people go to find content from the accounts or people they follow.

Now you can finally understand why you keep seeing those cat videos and food pictures on your feed.😀

So, if you've ever wondered how social media algorithms work, see here.

🤨 Can AI Forget? Google Takes on this Challenge

Google wants to find ways for AI to “forget” certain things. Yep, you read that correctly!

The company is holding the first “machine unlearning challenge”, in which researchers must make AI systems forget “a certain subset of the training images” to protect the privacy or rights of the individuals concerned.

Submissions will be automatically scored in terms of both forgetting quality and model utility. (See more guidelines here)

But fear not! Google is not abandoning participants to their own devices - They have graciously provided a "starting kit" to help get the ball rolling.

The competition will be hosted on Kaggle, from mid-July 2023 to mid-September 2023.

Mark your calendars, folks!🗓️
