🤩 ChatGPT is Now Available on Landlines and WhatsApp!

ChatGPT now takes calls on actual landlines!

That's right—it's time to dig out that trusty landline (well, maybe not the rotary one), dial 1-800-242-8478 ( or 1-800-CHATGPT), and voilà—you have OpenAI’s brilliant assistant on the line.

As of Wednesday, anyone in the U.S. can call ChatGPT and ask all their burning questions for free! Well, for 15 minutes a month per phone number, that is.

But if you think you might need some extra AI time, you could get creative with Google Voice numbers.

So, how does it work?

Well, It’s straight-up conversation.

The phone experience is a lot like Advanced Voice Mode—you ask, ChatGPT listens, responds, and can even do cool stuff like translate sentences into different languages.

Just don’t expect any fancy visuals or multimodal magic here—this is pure, old-school audio action.

Oh, and standard carrier fees might apply, so maybe don’t burn through your minutes asking ChatGPT to translate “pizza” into every language.

And if you prefer texting over talking no worries, ChatGPT is also sliding into WhatsApp chats globally.

It’s simple, requires no account, and feels like texting a friend who knows absolutely everything. But there’s a catch: a daily limit.

When you’re about to hit it, OpenAI will give you a friendly “Hey, maybe download the app?” nudge.

But that’s not all

They’re already working on adding cool new features for the WhatsApp integration, such as image analysis and web search, although there’s no word yet on when these will be available.

What’s fascinating is that this whole initiative started as a quick hack week project. According to OpenAI’s Kevin Weil, the team built it in just a few weeks, loved the result, and decided to share it with the world.

Interestingly, Google had a similar service back in 2007 called GOOG-411, which provided free directory assistance by voice.

However, by 2010 it mysteriously vanished.

Some speculated that Google by then had already achieved its goals, which was to gather a treasure trove of voice samples to fine-tune its speech recognition tech.

Google VP Marissa Mayer even admitted at the time that GOOG-411 was a clever way to gather diverse speech data for training their models. Sneaky, right?

Fast forward to today, and OpenAI swears it’s not pulling the same trick.

Their spokesperson, Taya Christianson, assures us these new ChatGPT calls won’t be used to train their language models.

So, go ahead and call with confidence, knowing that your data won’t be secretly collected.

 🥳 GitHub Makes Copilot Free!

In a major win for coders everywhere, GitHub has officially launched a free version of Copilot, its AI-powered code assistant.

Previously accessible only to paying users or specific groups like students and open-source maintainers, Copilot is now available to everyone—right out of the box with Microsoft’s VS Code editor.

This move aligns perfectly with our mission to empower one billion developers worldwide,” said GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. “We want to remove barriers so anyone, anywhere, can experience the joy of building software.

However, there’s a catch; the free version has some limitations and is designed for casual use.

Developers can access up to 2,000 code completions monthly and send a maximum of 50 Copilot Chat messages.

Additionally, the free plan includes access to Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI’s GPT-4o models.

Despite these restrictions, users can still tap into Copilot Extensions and skills across platforms like VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, and GitHub.com.

But what’s driving these updates now?

As competition heats up with alternatives like Tabnine, Qodo (previously known as Codium), and AWS offerings, GitHub’s freemium pivot leverages the massive reach of VS Code to expand Copilot’s user base.

With over 150 million developers already on the platform, GitHub is doubling down on its commitment to democratize coding.

Dohmke added, “We’ve always believed in breaking down barriers. This isn’t just about making an AI tool free; it’s about enabling the next generation of developers—whether they’re in Brazil, Pakistan, or Indonesia—to create and innovate.

Well, looking ahead, it's clear Copilot Free is more than a product; it’s a statement.

By offering the tool at no cost, GitHub is leaning into its vision of a billion-developer future, powered by accessible AI and a passion for open innovation.
