🤯 OpenAI Might Be Backed Into Renaming ChatGPT!
Have you noticed the recent trend of name changes or rebranding sweeping through the AI industry?
First, Microsoft switched from Bing to Copilot, and then Google followed suit, renaming Bard as Gemini.
But guess who might be next in line? OpenAI!
However (unlike others), OpenAI might not have a choice in the matter.
Here's why:
The US Patent and Trademark Office has rejected OpenAI's attempt to trademark the term "GPT"!
According to the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), OpenAI cannot claim exclusive rights to the term "GPT" (which stands for generative pre-trained transformer) as it is too general.
If OpenAI were to do so, it could potentially hinder competitors from using the term to accurately describe their own products.
OpenAI disagrees.
They don't think "GPT” is a term consumers would “immediately understand,” but their appeal has fallen on deaf ears.
If OpenAI can't snag the trademark, it means others can keep slapping "GPT" on their products, which might, at some point, lead to confusion.
The only way forward might be to change their name, which could be tricky, considering OpenAI uses GPT for nearly all their major products.
OpenAI has one more shot to appeal to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. So, Fingers crossed!
But before you go, here's a quick question for you:
Do you think the US Patent and Trademark Office is right? Is the term "GPT" too general for OpenAI to claim exclusive rights over? |
