ChatGPT’s Search Tool Flunks Test!

ChatGPT’s search tool might be fast but accurate? Not so much.

Researchers at Columbia’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism tested it, and let’s just say it didn’t exactly pass with flying colors.

Here’s what went down:

They fed it 200 quotes from 20 different publications, including some from sites ChatGPT wasn’t even allowed to access.

Instead of owning up to its limitations, the chatbot pulled a “fake it ‘til you make it” move and got it wrong. A lot.

In fact, it confidently fumbled 153 times and only admitted defeat a measly seven times.

And those mistakes? Oh, they were painfully hilarious.

For example, ChatGPT somehow turned a letter-to-the-editor from the Orlando Sentinel into a Time magazine article.

Then, when asked about a New York Times piece on whales, it confidently linked to a different website that had wholly plagiarized the story. Yikes.

When confronted, OpenAI coolly shrugged it off, saying the test wasn’t exactly how the tool was designed to be used.

But hey, they promised to improve!

Until then, if you’re counting on ChatGPT for serious research, maybe keep a real fact-checker in your corner—because this chatbot has the confidence of a trivia champ but the accuracy of a gossip column.

Here’s the full report from the researchers at Columbia’s Tow Center if you're interested.
