ChatGPT just got a serious memory glow-up. And the absolute best part? This time, the free crowd is not being left out in the cold.

So, what is actually going on behind the scenes?

OpenAI has been developing a background process that they’re literally calling "dreaming."

This feature lets ChatGPT quietly piece together random information from multiple past conversations without needing you to explicitly tell it to remember something. Think of it like your chatbot doing its homework and obsessing over your conversations while you sleep. It’s cute, slightly creepy, and honestly very useful.

If you remember the original memory feature launched back in April 2024, it was pretty bare-bones. It needed very obvious, repetitive instructions from users and tended to get stale over time. It was definitely not the reliable digital bestie we were promised.

The new upgrade builds directly on that dreaming process. ChatGPT can now generate a highly readable "memory summary" that you can check, update, and completely control at any time. You can also tell ChatGPT exactly when it should use what it knows about you, so you can turn off the eavesdropping whenever you want.

This smarter tech architecture also means it’s way better at carrying context across completely different topics.

For example, if you chatted about photography weeks ago and mentioned your specific camera, ChatGPT will automatically factor that in the next time you ask for random gear recommendations. And if you’re planning a vacation, it might suggest a gorgeous Singapore itinerary with street photography hotspots baked right in, purely based on what it already knows about your hobbies.

Who Gets the Upgrade and When?

Paid subscribers, you are up first. Plus and Pro users in the US get the upgrade starting June 4, with other countries rolling out in the weeks ahead. Paid users are also getting a much bigger memory capacity overall so the AI can store even more facts about your life.

But do not fret if you are on the budget plan! Free users will soon start building memories through the dreaming process for the very first time.

But here’s a thought: would you love that ChatGPT is dreaming about your conversations to help you plan trips, or is a chatbot with a diary about your life a little too weird?

As usual, meet us on YouTube so we can dig into this.
