Welcome Automaters, 👋
So this week, the exact same government yelling “China is stealing our AI!” quietly went ahead and used China's AI on one of its own official websites. Unbelievable right?
Let's break down the chaos:
The Slip-Up: The Federal Register—the government's daily list of proposed rules run by the National Archives—had a search tool powered by Alibaba’s Qwen model chilling right on its homepage.
The Cover-Up: Nobody even knows how long it was squatting there. But the second people started screaming about it online on Wednesday, it vanished faster than free pizza in an office breakroom.
The Plot Twist: Just last week, the FBI accused Alibaba of "malicious" copying of Anthropic's tech as part of an alleged "industrial scale" operation. Rep. John Moolenaar called it one of the most jaw-dropping contradictions in recent memory.
Sure, Georgetown's Anupam Chander pointed out it wasn't a massive security risk since the site's content is already public. But as Sen. Mark Warner rightly asked: Did any US data actually leave government control? Yikes.
Daniel Castro, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, didn't hold back either, calling the mismatch between fierce US-China competition and a US agency casually adopting a Chinese model "one of the most insane things I've ever seen."
At the end of it all this raised major questions about whether the federal government was directly contradicting its own messaging.
Here’s Our Last Breakdown on YouTube.
Here's what we have for you today
🤑 China's Entire AI Industry Makes Less Money Than Anthropic Alone

If you thought the Silicon Valley hype train was dramatic, wait until you get a load of what is happening across the Pacific.
A brand-new bombshell report from the Rhodium Group just dropped, and honestly? It feels like we’re watching someone try to buy a Ferrari on a lemonade-stand budget.
Here’s the ultimate tea: China's major AI heavyweights are collectively pulling in only about 10% of the cold, hard cash that OpenAI and Anthropic are raking in all by themselves. Let that sink in for a second.
Now let’s look at the numbers, because math never lies, even when tech founders wish it did. Rhodium Group crunched the data using Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), which is just industry-speak for taking a recent monthly cash haul and multiplying it by 12. And guess what, the result is mind-blowing:
OpenAI is sitting pretty at a massive $40 billion ARR.
Anthropic is absolutely crushing it at $65 billion ARR.
ByteDance is leading the pack on the Chinese side with $4 billion.
Alibaba pulled in a respectable $2.4 billion.
Z.AI is flashing $1.8 billion to investors.
Moonshot brought up the rear of the big players at $1 billion.
MiniMax is sitting at $800 million.
DeepSeek Clocked in at $500 million.
Now, here’s where things get gloriously messy. Even though the revenue gap is wider than a grand canyon, the valuations investors are slapping on these Chinese startups are completely detached from reality.
DeepSeek is valued at an absurd 163x its revenue.
Moonshot is trailing right behind at a wild 50x.
Compare that to the U.S. giants: OpenAI sits at a modest 34x, while Anthropic rests at 21x.
Logan Wright, a co-author of the Rhodium report, did not sugarcoat it for CNBC. He pointed out that this massive financing gap creates a ticking time bomb for China. And that scaling sustainably is going to be an uphill battle, especially since these labs rely heavily on volatile equity markets.
And spoiler alert: betting on predictable equity markets in China historically ranks right up there with predicting the weather in April.
So, why are the revenue numbers so disproportionate? It boils down to a couple of major structural hurdles:
The Open-Source Trap: Many Chinese AI models are open-source. That means anyone with the right hardware can download and run them for free without ever paying a dime to the original creators.
Pricing Wars: U.S. models are mostly closed-source, and according to comparison firm Artificial Analysis, top American models can charge much higher per-task prices than their Chinese counterparts.
Monetization Hustle: Chinese labs are currently scrambling to invent brand-new ways to monetize third-party access just to keep up.
Naturally, when the money gets tight, everyone looks toward the public markets for a quick bailout. The gossip mill says Moonshot has confidentially filed for a Hong Kong IPO with a breezy $3 billion goal, while DeepSeek has tapped CITIC Securities to prep for a listing on Shanghai's STAR Market. Meanwhile, U.S. watchers are eyeing OpenAI's delayed IPO plans and Anthropic's rumored debut next month.
Sure, Rhodium notes that their study captured data from earlier this summer when adoption was still climbing from a slow start. Z.AI even bounced back by boosting its year-end ARR target to $3 billion (up from $2.4 billion), giving their shares a nice little 5% bump in early Thursday trading.
Even with the rebound, one thing is glaringly obvious: the valuation vibes are immaculate, but the actual cash flow needs a serious glow-up. And the core question remains: Can you build a global empire on open-source handouts when the U.S. is locking its doors and cashing trillion-dollar checks?
What do you think? Are these astronomical valuations a stroke of visionary genius, or is this the ultimate tech bubble waiting to pop?
