⚖️ Elon Musk v OpenAI Again!

Elon Musk is back in the legal ring with OpenAI!
But this time, the lawsuit is more aggressive than the one withdrawn in June – at least, that’s what his lawyer says!
The new lawsuit still alleges that OpenAI founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman have veered away from their original mission to develop AI for humanity's benefit.
But there’s more to it now!
Musk now alleges that Altman and Brockman tricked him into co-founding OpenAI by falsely promising it would be safer and more transparent than profit-driven alternatives.
According to Musk, those promises about OpenAI’s nonprofit structure were “the hook for Altman’s long con.”
And it doesn't stop there; The suit also accuses OpenAI of:
Violating federal racketeering laws in a scheme to defraud Musk and
Argues that their contract with Microsoft would nullify Microsoft’s rights to OpenAI’s tech once artificial general intelligence (AGI) is achieved.
Curious about the details? You can check out the lawsuit for yourself here!

🤔 Could Watermarking ChatGPT Text Become a Thing?

The Wall Street Journal recently revealed that OpenAI has had a watermarking system for detecting AI-generated text ready for about a year.
This watermarking system tweaks how the AI predicts words, creating a pattern that can be identified.
You’d think releasing this would be a no-brainer, especially for teachers wanting to catch students using AI for assignments, right?
Well, guess what? OpenAI is hesitant to release this groundbreaking system.
Why, you ask? Well, It's a classic case of wanting to be transparent while also needing to make money.
Let’s break that down:
OpenAI’s watermarking method boasts a 99.9% certainty in detecting AI-generated text and is also resistant to tampering, such as paraphrasing.
Despite the high accuracy, an internal survey revealed that nearly a third of users would be less inclined to use ChatGPT if it had this feature, fearing false accusations of AI use.
Now, not everyone thinks this way; another survey showed strong global support for AI detection tools.
However, OpenAI’s other concern is the tool's susceptibility to circumvention and the potential negative impact it could have on non-English speakers.
Overall, there’s a fear that launching this tool could turn off users, which could hurt the business.
But doesn't that also mean misuse and deception will persist?
A recent survey conducted by the Center for Democracy & Technology proved educators have been struggling with generative AI detection, with a whopping 59% of middle and high school teachers suspected of misusing AI to cheat on schoolwork.
And hey, that’s up a massive 17 points from the prior school year!
Honestly, it's a tough call for a business trying to balance profit and ethical responsibility, and it’s understandable that a business must make a profit.
But it does have a moral obligation to do the right thing, right?
