European regulators and privacy watchdogs are already circling, asking tough questions, filing complaints, and who knows? It looks like the fun could be over for DeepSeek, with the courtroom possibly calling sooner than expected.

DeepSeek, the Chinese AI upstart that’s been making waves (and shaking up some AI companies), is now attracting a different kind of attention—this time from European data regulators asking some uncomfortable questions about how it handles personal data in relation to GDPR, (the data protection regulatory framework in Europe).

The Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA), alongside consumer advocacy group Euroconsumers, has filed a complaint, and let’s just say they’re not buying DeepSeek’s vague “Don’t worry, we follow the laws” response in its privacy policy.

At the heart of the issue? DeepSeek is based in China, and according to its own privacy policy that’s where it stores user data. And that, folks, is exactly what has European watchdogs wondering and asking:

What data is being collected? Where is it coming from? How is it being used? What legal grounds does DeepSeek have for any of it? And most importantly—how much control do users actually have over their own information?

They also want to know if DeepSeek scrapes data from the web, how users (including those who never signed up) are informed about it, and how the platform handles minors’ data.

Technically, DeepSeek says it’s not for users under 18, but there’s no real system in place to verify ages or actually enforce that rule.

Meanwhile, over at the European Commission, DeepSeek was a hot topic at a press conference. But officials played it cool.

When asked about the AI model’s potential privacy, security, and censorship issues, the response was basically: “Too soon to tell, but we’re watching”.

They’re not launching an investigation yet, but they made it clear—any AI service operating in Europe has to follow the rules.

For now, DeepSeek has 20 days to respond to the Italian DPA’s request. But with privacy watchdogs and regulators already circling, this might just be the beginning of a much bigger battle.
