š· Google Pulls Gemini AI Demo!
Remember that jaw-dropping Gemini demo video Google dropped last December?
The one where Gemini seemed to effortlessly respond to voice and video promptsālike identifying parts of drawings and whipping up geography games on the spot?
Well, brace yourself because it turns out it wasnāt entirely accurate.
Hereās what happened:
The National Advertising Division (NAD), an advertising watchdog, questioned whether the demo truly represented Gemini's capabilities.
Youād think Google would step up and defend its AI, right?
Surprisingly, Google quietly unlisted the video instead of defending its AI, raising eyebrows everywhere.
But hereās the real kicker:
It was later discovered that the video had a tiny disclaimer buried in the description, revealing that the responses were shortened and the latency reduced.
Basically, the whole thing was edited to make Gemini look much faster and more impressive than it actually is!š¤Æ
To add fuel to the fire in what we think is probably the weakest excuse ever, Google DeepMindās Oriol Vinyals later explained that the demo was meant to showcase what Gemini could do in the future, not what itās currently capable of.
And if that's not enough, Google's spokesperson mentioned that they accept the NADās ruling but will keep the video up.
But this time, paired with a blog post explaining how it was created. (Here's the post if you're interested)
The takeaway? Don't always trust those flashy demo videosāsometimes, theyāre more marketing magic than reality!

š¤Æ Meta's AI Training Resumes in the UK!
Meta is restarting its AI training plans in the UK!
After facing regulatory roadblocks earlier this year, the company had to pause its plans to use the public Facebook and Instagram posts from its U.K. user base for AI training.
One key issue was Meta's "opting out" process, which was criticized for being overly complex.
Instead of just giving people a straightforward āopt-in/outā checkbox, the company made users jump through hoops to find an objection form hidden behind multiple clicks or taps.
Users were forced to state why they didnāt want their data processed and then informed that Meta's decision to honor this request was entirely at its discretion.
Although, the company did publicly claim that it would honor each request.
But good news ā changes have been made to that āopt-outā approach!
In a blog post, the company claims it has āincorporated regulatory feedbackā into a revised āopt-outā approach to ensure that itās āeven more transparent.ā
So, starting next week, U.K. users will receive notifications about this data use and can formally object if they choose, but this time around, the objection form will be simpler.
And for those who have previously objected, there's no need to resubmit their objections.
However, itās important to note that Meta hasn't explained how they've simplified the objection forms, so we'll have to take their word for it.
