Google’s AI just broke copyright—again!
🔧 Plus, AI Troubleshooter: Fix of the Week

Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.
AI and copyright have been on a collision course for a while, but Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash just took things to a whole new level of chaos.
Not only is it making copyright enforcement look pointless, but it’s also coming for Google Assistant’s job. So… what exactly is going on?
Here’s what we have for you today:

©️ Google’s Gemini Breaks Copyright Rules—And Kills Assistant Too.

Well, here we go again. Just when we thought we were making progress in the never-ending battle of AI vs. copyright, Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash throws another curveball.
Over the weekend, users discovered a controversial new trick up Gemini’s sleeve—it can wipe watermarks off images, including those from stock photo giants like Getty Images.
And it doesn’t just remove them. As several users on Reddit and X noted, it even fills in the missing parts so seamlessly that you’d never know a watermark was ever there. Yikes.
Oh, and that’s not all—it also seems more than happy to generate images of celebrities and copyrighted characters.
The worst part? It’s doing it for free.

Now, AI messing with copyright isn’t exactly breaking news. In fact, it’s already made it ridiculously hard to tell what’s real and what’s AI-generated. But this? This is a full-blown red flag.
Artists and creators have been fighting to protect their work, platforms have been scrambling to label AI-generated content, and watermarks have been one of the few reliable ways to do that—especially for stock media companies like Getty Images.
But now? Just when we thought we had a semi-decent solution, along comes Gemini, undoing all that effort like it’s nothing. Really It’s like putting a lock on your door, only for someone to invent a universal key overnight.
Legally speaking, this is a mess. Removing watermarks without permission is straight-up illegal under U.S. copyright law—unless, of course, you manage to squeeze into some rare legal loophole.
That’s why other AI models, like OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7, refuse to do it. According to them, it’s unethical and potentially illegal.
Google, on the other hand, seems to have missed that memo. And so far? Radio silence on the controversy.
But that’s not the only shake-up coming from Google.
In a move that surprises absolutely no one, Google is officially pulling the plug on Google Assistant and replacing it with Gemini.
Over the next few months, users will be upgraded to Gemini, and by the end of the year, Assistant will be gone from most Android phones, app stores, cars, headphones, watches, and even smart home devices like speakers and TVs.
Basically, if it had Google Assistant, it’s about to get Gemini instead.
And Google’s reasoning? Gemini is “more advanced” and promises a better experience.
Whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen. But to ease the transition, Google is already adding features like music playback, timers, and lock screen actions.
But let’s be honest—this isn’t just about swapping Assistant for Gemini. It's also going all in on AI, betting that it’ll shape the future of everything.
So, in one move, Google is making AI a bigger part of our daily lives while also making it easier to manipulate copyrighted content.
The timing? Impeccable. The impact? Well, that’s a whole new headache for copyright holders—and anyone trying to tell what’s real and what’s AI-generated.

🚨 Leaked Apple Meeting Reveals Just How Bad Siri’s Situation Really Is!

Apple’s struggle to keep up in the AI race just hit a new low, and this time, it’s coming straight from the inside.
A leaked all-hands meeting at Apple’s Siri division has confirmed what many already suspected—Siri’s long-promised upgrades are nowhere near ready, and no one seems to know when they will be. 🤦♂️
According to Bloomberg, the meeting was led by senior director Robby Walker, who oversees Siri development. He didn’t sugarcoat the situation, calling it “ugly” and admitting that employees were likely feeling burned out or frustrated by the delays.
Apple originally announced a slew of Siri improvements last June, including:
Better contextual awareness 🤖
Smarter voice interactions 🎙️
More advanced AI capabilities 🛠️
But those features? Now pushed back indefinitely. ⏳
Even worse? Walker admitted that Apple isn’t even sure if these features will be ready for iOS 19 later this year.
That’s the goal, but “doesn’t mean that we’re shipping then,” he told employees. Apple has other priorities, and some projects are now considered “more timeline-urgent” than Siri’s long-overdue overhaul.
The meeting also exposed internal tensions, particularly between the Siri team and Apple’s marketing department.
Walker revealed that Apple’s communications team wanted to showcase advanced Siri features in promotional materials, even though they were nowhere near functional.
The result? Apple hyped up features that were never actually ready. 😬
The backlash has already begun:
❌ Apple pulled an iPhone 16 ad that showcased the now-delayed features.
❌ Disclaimers were added to Apple’s website, clarifying that these updates are coming… at some undetermined future date.
❌ Major quality issues were discovered—according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new Siri capabilities weren’t working properly nearly one-third of the time. 🤯
In a rare moment of transparency, Walker told employees that senior Apple executives, including software chief Craig Federighi and AI boss John Giannandrea, are taking “intense personal accountability” for the Siri disaster.
He acknowledged that expectations are high: “Customers are not expecting only these new features but they also want a more fully rounded-out Siri. Apple refuses to ship anything until it’s truly ready.”
Walker took a jab at competitors, saying: “These are not quite ready to go to the general public, even though our competitors might have launched them in this state or worse.” (Looking at you, ChatGPT and Gemini. 👀)
For now, Apple fans will have to keep waiting—possibly well beyond iOS 19—before Siri finally starts acting like the AI assistant Apple has been promising for years. ⏳
