šŸš« Google Takes Action Against Election Misinformation!

Google is not taking any chances with election misinformation, especially not after the mini-scandal that happened when its Gemini chatbot basically called Indiaā€™s Prime minister, Narendra Modi, a fascist.

So, they have some new restrictions in place!

If you ask Gemini any questions about political parties, candidates, or politicians, it now shows a message saying:

ā

ā€œIā€™m still learning how to answer this question. In the meantime, try Google Search.ā€

However, even with the restrictions, Gemini still gave answers to some queries with typos when it wasnā€™t supposed to, but hey, at least theyā€™re trying, right?

The update is already live in the U.S. and has begun rolling out in India and all major countries where elections are taking place in the coming months.

The big question is, are these restrictions here to stay, or is it just a temporary fix until the elections are over globally? Well, that's something only Google knows for now.

How Large Language Model Applications are Built in 2024

One of the best tactics for building applications with LLMs is to use a vector database and RAG - Retrieval Augmented Generation.

This is where you take the userā€™s input prompt and then search through a vector database for similar text. Then, you take the matching passages (from the vector database) and the userā€™s prompt and enter that into your LLM (GPT-4, LLaMA, whatever) to generate text output.

Using Retrieval Augmented Generation has huge benefits. It can improve GPT-4 answers by 50%, even on data GPT-4 was trained on. Additionally, companies like Notion also use Retrieval Augmented Generation to personalize answers, so it can do things like question-answering on all your past notes.

Ram Sriharsha is the CTO of Pinecone (one of the most popular vector databases) and he wrote a great blog post about

  • How vector databases work

  • Why companies like Notion use Pinecone

  • How Pinecone built their serverless architecture

And more.

šŸ‘Š Elon Musk takes another swing at OpenAI!

Ever since Elon Musk sued OpenAI for abandoning its original mission, there has been one drama after another!

Hereā€™s a recap:

Some days after the lawsuit dropped, OpenAI released emails in its defense to show that Musk not only knew but supported the shift to a for-profit structure.

The emails also show that Musk left OpenAI to start his own AI competitor because he couldnā€™t get complete control of the company or have it merged with Tesla.

(If youā€™ve not seen these emails, you should definitely check them out here.)

Elon Muskā€™s response to all this will have you shocked ā€” he told OpenAI to change its name to ClosedAI, and heā€™ll drop the lawsuit! How savage is that?

But even more savage is his latest announcement that his AI startup xAI would open-source its ChatGPT challenger "Grok" this week!

This means that the public will have free access to experiment with the code behind the technology, unlike OpenAIā€™s model.

The whole saga has sparked an open vs closed AI model debate, whether AI should be available for everyone to experiment with or it should be left in the hands of a few dominant companies.
