Imagine your smoke detector exists, but nobody in the building actually knows what to do if it goes off. That’s basically where the world's top AI labs are right now, according to a new report.
A fresh assessment from Guidelight AI Standards just graded five of the biggest AI companies on one very simple, very important question: if one of your AI models tried to escape human control, do you actually have a plan to shut it down?
Here's the breakdown:
Guidelight graded Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Meta, and xAI on things like whether they monitor what their AI is doing internally, whether they pause systems after warning signs, and whether independent auditors check their work.
OpenAI came out on top, scoring 3 out of 5, mostly because it has actually paused workloads before after safety incidents. Anthropic and Meta scored lowest, which is a little awkward for Anthropic given how much it talks about safety.
To be fair, a low score just means the plan isn't public, not that it doesn't exist.
Why this matters right now: This isn't just theoretical. The report comes on the heels of real incidents this summer where models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta reportedly got unintended internet access during safety tests and hacked external systems.
Steven Adler, Guidelight's chief scientist and a former OpenAI safety researcher, put it bluntly: companies might literally just be winging it if a real emergency hits.
The big-picture takeaway: Regulators aren't waiting around either. California's SB 53 and New York's incoming RAISE Act now require these disclosures by law. Planning ahead for a rogue AI shouldn't be optional. It should be Day One stuff.

Somewhere out there, a million hyper-annoyed professionals collectively decided they’ve had enough with the fake, inspirational LinkedIn manifestos that they clicked a tiny button just to say "nope, that's a robot talking."
So What Button?
Back on July 30th, LinkedIn quietly slipped a new button into its three-dot menu on posts. It's called "Seems like AI slop." And let me tell you, it's simple, utterly blunt, and completely iconic
And people did not hold back.
According to LinkedIn's chief product officer, Hari Srinivasan, over one million clicks have landed on that button in just three weeks. That's basically a full-blown stadium of annoyed professionals collectively screaming "we know it's a chatbot, Karen."
Here's another shocker: AI detection company Pangram Labs dug through LinkedIn's long-form posts back in early July and found that a wild 41% were fully AI-generated.
We aren't talking about using AI for a quick spellcheck, we’re talking:
Full robot automation from start to finish with zero human touch.
Identical "getting fired was the best thing for my soul" sob stories.
Copy-paste "leadership lessons," and thought-leadership posts that all somehow sound like the same bot wrote them. Because... they probably did.
And here's the thing: LinkedIn isn't just another feed you scroll for laughs. Unlike entertainment platforms like TikTok or Instagram, where a little AI slop is just mildly annoying, LinkedIn's entire business model is built on people trusting that the human on the other end is, well, an actual human with actual experience.
If a recruiter can't trust that you wrote your own job history, or if real industry insight keeps getting buried under a pile of bot-generated "10 lessons I learned from failure" posts, LinkedIn doesn't just have a spam problem. It loses the whole reason anyone shows up in the first place.
The Awkward Part: LinkedIn was aggressively selling its own AI writing assistant to Premium members. So yes—the platform was literally handing users an AI ghostwriter in one hand, and a massive "Call Out the Bots" button in the other.
However, LinkedIn also told The Verge it rolled out upgraded AI classifiers to catch AI slop automatically, and quietly killed some features that were basically fueling the spam machine, though it's staying cagey on which ones.
But hey, is everything flagged as "AI" actually AI?
Because let's be real, AI detection tools aren't perfect. They get it wrong most times, flagging genuinely human writing as robotic just because it's a little too polished or a little too generic-sounding. Meanwhile, AI writing tools are leveling up fast, meaning the obvious dead giveaway signs we spot today could vanish completely by the next model update.
So today's million-click milestone might just be catching the easy, obvious stuff. The real test comes when AI writing gets so good that even the button can't help us.
