Huawei Just Found a Back Door for China’s AI Market?!

Plus, how to Double-Check Facts using AI

Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.

What happens when a global giant gets blocked, and another slides in with the perfect solution?

Huawei’s new AI chip is about to fill the Nvidia-sized gap in China’s tech landscape. But is this really the game-changer it seems to be?

Let’s break it down.

Oh and, a quick reminder: You voted - we listened! We’re doing a live HBS case breakdown today Tuesday, April 29 at 8:30 PM CST! If you want to join, click here — and we’ll see you there!

Here's what we have for you today

🤯 Huawei’s Bold Answer to Nvidia’s Ban and What It Means for China’s AI Future

Huawei is about to mass ship its new AI chip, the Ascend 910C, starting next month — and honestly, the timing couldn’t be more dramatic if they tried.

Like, “the universe just handed them a golden opportunity” kind of dramatic.

Why?

Because Chinese AI companies have been in full-blown “help us” mode after the U.S. decided Nvidia’s H20 chips now require an export license.

Translation: No more easy Nvidia hookups. So now, Huawei’s rolling up with a solution— namely 910C chips!

So, what’s actually inside this 910C chip?

Let’s just say — it’s not a revolution. It’s a serious glow-up.

Huawei basically took two of its older 910B chips, fused them together using some high-level integration tricks, and now the 910C delivers:

  • Double the computing power and memory compared to the 910B.

  • Better support for different types of AI tasks, so it’s more flexible and way less of a one-trick pony.

  • Performance-wise? It’s pulling up close to Nvidia’s H100 — and considering that chip got banned from sale in China before it even hit the streets, that’s kinda a power move.

And get this — there are whispers that small batches of the 910C have already started shipping, with full-scale deliveries to Chinese clients possibly kicking off as soon as next month.

But of course, there’s a little behind-the-scenes drama.

For one, Huawei’s keeping things vague, calling all the shipment talk “speculation.”

Meanwhile:

  • SMIC, China’s top chipmaker, is rumored to be making parts for the 910C using their N+2 7nm tech — but word on the street is, their chip yields aren’t exactly winning any awards.

  • There’s also talk that some components might trace back to Taiwan’s TSMC via a third-party player called Sophgo. Huawei’s flat-out denying it — but U.S. investigators are definitely out here squinting hard at the receipts.

So, what’s the big picture here?

The U.S. tried to stall China’s AI rise by cutting off Nvidia’s chip supply. But instead of stopping the train, it kinda just... handed Huawei the wheel.

Now, the 910C is shaping up to be China’s go-to AI chip — not because it’s some mind-blowing innovation, but because it’s here, it’s powerful, and it’s good enough to fill the Nvidia-sized gap.

Moral of the story?

Sanctions may have slammed the front door shut — but Huawei just strolled in through the side with a brand-new chip..

Give it a couple of months, and the headlines will be all about how China’s AI chips are not just catching up — they’re calling the shots.

🛒 OpenAI Gives ChatGPT Shopping Powers!

You know how Google’s been our go-to for shopping searches?

Yeah... OpenAI is lowkey sliding into that lane, and honestly? It’s looking kinda good doing it.

Here’s the lowdown:

OpenAI just dropped a major update to ChatGPT’s search feature.

Now, when you search for products, the chatbot won’t just talk about them—it’ll actually show you real recommendations, complete with:

  • Product images

  • Legit reviews

  • And direct links to buy the thing right then and there.

And the best part? You can ask in plain, super-specific English like: “What’s a good $50 gift for someone who’s obsessed with skincare?”

Oh, and you don’t have to worry about annoying ads junks… at least not yet.

OpenAI promises it’s pulling product info from real metadata—not just selling you whatever brand paid the most to be seen.

That said… the ad-free era might not last forever.

Turns out, CEO Sam Altman—who used to be hardcore anti-ads—is now warming up to the idea of “tasteful” affiliate links.

So yeah, tiny money trails might happen later, but nothing gross like “pay to appear first”... yet.

But ultimately? We’ll have to wait and see just how “tasteful” their version of tasteful really is.

Now, here’s what else you should know:

  • The feature’s rolling out globally on GPT-4o (yup, that’s the default ChatGPT model now), and it’s available to everyone—Pro, Plus, and even Free users!

  • If you're a Pro or Plus user, ChatGPT will soon use memory to tailor recommendations based on your past chats. So if you’re a skincare addict or into minimalist tech, it’ll remember that and shop accordingly.

  • Also worth noting: ChatGPT will now show trending searches while you type, kind of like Google’s autocomplete.

  • And—plot twist—It’s bringing shopping help to WhatsApp too. So yeah, you can literally DM or call 1-800-CHATGPT from WhatsApp to get personalized product advice now.

And get this: apparently, people are already loving it. OpenAI says users made over a billion web searches inside ChatGPT just last week.

Long story short?

ChatGPT isn’t just writing essays anymore—it’s officially creeping into our online shopping habits. And honestly? It’s about time someone gave Google some real competition.
