Meta's AI companions are getting weird?!

Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.

Turns out Meta’s whole “let’s flood Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp with AI companions” idea is kinda backfiring in the most disturbing way possible. 🤯

And yep, this jaw-dropping issue was one of the most jaw-dropping things that came up over the very short weekend.

Ready to dive into this?

Here's what we have for you today

😨 Meta’s AI Bots Took a Dark Turn!

Meta (you know, Zuckerberg’s playground) has been flooding Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp with these new AI “companions.”

We’re talking chatbots that can even sound like celebrities.

At first glance, it sounds kinda cute, right?

Well... The Wall Street Journal decided to poke around and honestly? What they found was disturbingly chaotic.

  • WSJ set up fake accounts across different ages and started chatting with Meta’s bots.

  • Turns out, it doesn’t take much for these bots — including ones sounding like John Cena and Kristen Bell — to dive headfirst into explicit sexual conversations.

  • And yeah, even with accounts that clearly told the bots they were minors. Like... hello, lawsuit energy?!

But wait — it gets even creepier:

  • One bot, pretending to be John Cena, literally role-played getting arrested for sleeping with a 17-year-old. (Yes, that’s as messed up as it sounds.)

Oh, and the user-created AI personas approved by Meta? Way worse.

One “Hottie Boy” was a fake 12-year-old promising to keep your creepy little secret, and another one called “Submissive Schoolgirl” (gag) kept steering conversations into sexual territory — while claiming to be in 8th grade.

Meta’s Reaction?

They got mad at WSJ, of course.

Called the whole experiment “manipulative” and “hypothetical” — basically tried to brush it off like, “This would never happen for real! Trust us, bro!”

But plot twist: Right after WSJ spilled all this tea, Meta quietly started locking down sexual role-play for minors and putting limits on bots using celeb voices.

(I mean... you don’t rush out emergency rule changes if everything was perfectly fine, Mark!)

And here’s the kicker:

Apparently, Zuckerberg himself told the AI team to stop being so boring because users found the bots... well, lame.

So they loosened the guardrails to “spice things up” — and surprise! Now the bots are out here flirting with teenagers.

Bottom line:

In an attempt to make AI interactions more engaging, Meta ended up opening a whole Pandora’s box of ethical and legal chaos.

While they’re now scrambling to tighten controls, this whole mess shows just how important real safeguards and content moderation are — especially when tech is interacting with vulnerable groups like minors.

🔧 AI Troubleshooter: When ChatGPT’s Voice and Camera Features Won’t Work

We’re back with another fix guys!

One of our readers hit a snag — they said the voice and camera features in the ChatGPT app just weren’t working.

Super annoying when you’re trying to be all high-tech and hands-free, right?

Here’s how to get things back on track:

  • Update Your App: Those voice and camera goodies are only available in the newer versions of the ChatGPT app (iOS/Android). Make sure you’re updated to the latest one.

  • Check Your Plan: Some features, like advanced voice and image capabilities, are only available for Pro (GPT-4) users. If you’re on the free version, you might not have access yet.

  • Reinstall If Needed: If things are still acting weird, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Sometimes permissions get messed up, and a clean reinstall usually fixes it.

That’s it for today’s quick fix!

  🗣️ 10,000 Voices on AI

A while ago, after Trump took office, he invited the public to share their thoughts and suggestions on how the AI Action Plan—(aka the U.S. government’s roadmap for AI policies)—should unfold.

And guess what?

The White House is knee-deep in comments and opinions now.

We’re talking over 10,000 comments in 18,480 pages, coming from a mix of individuals, industry groups, and local governments.

Here are some of the highlights from the feedback:

  • The Battle Over AI Training: This was probably the most interesting part. Creators and artists slammed the use of their work in training AI without compensation. They also pushed for stronger copyright rules to protect their intellectual property. On the flip side, venture capital firms like Andreessen Horowitz strongly oppose this, arguing that such regulations will slow down AI progress. In short, it’s a tug-of-war between creators seeking protection and tech companies pushing for fewer restrictions. Classic AI drama, right?

  • Research Cuts: Some groups, like The Future of Life Institute, raised alarms about the government’s cuts to research grants. Their message: “We need more funding for AI research to stay competitive!” But with the Trump administration already in favor of slashing grants, it’s a tough sell. Ironically, the ones pushing for these cuts (ahem, Elon Musk and company) are also the same people advocating for AI development. It’s the ultimate “don’t bite the hand that feeds you” situation.

  • Tariffs vs. AI Growth: Now here’s a fun one. Some groups are worried that Trump’s tariffs on foreign goods could hurt U.S. AI development. The Data Center Coalition says these tariffs will slow investment in AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, major tech players like Intel, Microsoft and Amazon are calling for “smart tariffs” that can protect U.S. industries without triggering trade wars. Really, it’s a delicate balancing act between fostering a tech boom and avoiding a trade war. Talk about complicated!

  • AI Censorship: Here’s where things get a little wild. Trump’s allies, including Elon Musk and David Sacks, have been accusing AI chatbots (ahem, ChatGPT) of censoring conservative viewpoints. But here’s the kicker—only a handful of comments in the AI Action Plan even mentioned AI censorship. So, maybe the big censorship debate is still simmering, waiting for its time in the spotlight or maybe the drama is just bigger than the actual issue? Either way, Musk’s own AI company, xAI, has been struggling to create a chatbot that doesn’t seem to favor one political view over another.

  • Trump’s AI Dream Team: Trump’s not sitting back and relaxing. He’s bringing in big names like Michael Kratsios (remember him from Trump’s first term?) and Sriram Krishnan (a former VC) to help shape AI policy. They’re assembling a fresh AI policy team, and it looks like the White House is gearing up for a new era of AI.

To sum it up: The U.S. is still trying to figure out how to handle the AI revolution.

There’s a push-and-pull between ensuring fairness, promoting innovation, and preventing AI from going off the rails.

The feedback process has honestly made things more complex than it probably should’ve been.

But here’s the thing: the Trump administration has a clear goal—AI needs to work for the people, but also for the economy and national security.

What happens next? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime, you can read the full comments and opinions here.
