🤖 Meta Is Launching a Commercial AI Model

Meta is preparing to release a commercial version of its AI model (LLaMA), allowing start-ups and businesses to build custom software using the technology.

Why this matters:

  • Meta can benefit from the collective expertise of developers worldwide to enhance their AI model and surpass their competitors.

  • Meta's open-source technology is currently free to use, unlike  Google & OpenAI, which charge for access to their LLMs — this means faster adoption circle for Meta.

Oh, other AI companies are just sitting with their hands crossed.

  • OpenAI is considering developing its open-source language model to compete with Meta.

  • French start-up Mistral is exploring possibly releasing an open-source version of its technology.

  • Google continues to adhere to a closed-source strategy for its AI models — even though a leaked memo from one of their engineers called them out for having "no moat".

⚖️ China Introduces Strict AI Rules

Chinese authorities have published new rules governing generative AI, and they're genuinely one of a kind!

Initially drafted in April 2023, the rules introduce unique protections not found in other parts of the world.

  • AI operators of generative AI are to ensure their services "adhere to the core values of socialism".

  • Certain output types are prohibited — content that undermines state power, promotes secession, incites terrorism, or threatens national unity and social stability.

  • AI operators must enhance the quality and authenticity of training data and ensure non-discrimination in algorithms.

  • Consent of individuals is required before including personal information in training data.

  • AI must be developed with known secure tools.

These are just a few examples; you can find the full set of rules on this page. (you may need to use a Google translator).

The new regulations will become effective on August 15th, indicating a clear timeline for compliance.

😡 OpenAI’s GPT-4 Fails to Impress Users

Users are unhappy with OpenAI's GPT-4, claiming its quality has declined.

But of course, OpenAI doesn’t quite agree.😒

OpenAI's VP of product, Peter Welinder, tweeted that GPT-4 is not less intelligent than previous versions. He suggests users might notice issues when using the system more heavily and asks for examples of regression for investigation.

OpenAI has been through the wringer in recent weeks.

From dealing with a flurry of lawsuits and an FTC inquiry to witnessing declining user numbers, they now find themselves facing the wrath of GPT-4 users

Let's hope they can turn it all around!🤞
