The AI model that’s rumoured to be 100x smarter than GPT-4

Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.

🤯 OpenAI’s Next Big Thing!

OpenAI is cooking up something big—like, really big.
According to The Verge, their next AI model, Orion, is set to launch by December, but sadly, you won’t get to play with it in ChatGPT right away.
Instead, OpenAI is giving its closest partners first dibs to build their own projects before the rest of us get a peek.
Meanwhile, Microsoft (OpenAI’s AI BFF) is already preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November.
So, things are moving fast!😀
And while Orion is being hyped as the successor to GPT-4, no one knows if it’ll actually be called GPT-5.
But here’s what we do know:
An OpenAI executive previously hinted that Orion might be up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4.
Yep, you read that right—100 times! That’s like upgrading from a race car to a rocket ship.🚀
And to get Orion this smart, OpenAI reportedly used a model called o1 (aka “Strawberry”) to generate synthetic data for its training.
Oh, and a fun fact: they even threw a happy hour party to celebrate finishing Orion’s training.🥳
OpenAI’s ultimate goal is to combine all its models into something so powerful it could lead to AGI—artificial general intelligence.
To top it all off, CEO Sam Altman teased the launch with a cryptic tweet on X, saying he’s excited about “winter constellations.”
And guess what’s the brightest constellation in winter? Orion, of course!
So yeah, we might just get a December to remember with Orion’s debut but don’t hold your breath.
If there’s one thing common with tech launches, it’s the last-minute change of plans that might come up unexpectedly.

⚖️ Character.AI Faces Lawsuit After Tragic Teen Suicide!

Character.AI, its founders, and Google are being sued over the tragic death of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III.
The suit, filed by his mother, Megan Garcia, makes serious allegations of wrongful death, negligence, deceptive trade practices, and product liability against these companies.
It claims that the platform for custom AI chatbots was “unreasonably dangerous” and lacked the necessary safety measures, particularly when marketed to a younger audience.
Before his death, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III had been engaging with chatbots modeled after characters like Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones.
He chatted with the bots frequently in the months before his death and died by suicide just “seconds” after his last interaction with the bot.
And that’s not all!
Character.AI also features mental health-focused chatbots, such as “Therapist” and “Are You Feeling Lonely,” with which Setzer interacted.
And now, the suit accuses Character.AI of “anthropomorphizing” these AI characters and providing what amounts to “psychotherapy without a license.”
In response, Character.AI has announced significant changes to its platform.
These include content filters to help shield minors from sensitive topics or suggestive content and improved detection/response to user inputs that violate its Terms or Guidelines.
Also included are reminders that the AI interactions aren’t real people and notifications when a user has spent an hour-long session on the platform.
In addition, Character.AI reiterated that they take user safety very seriously and have implemented numerous new safety measures over the past six months.
One of these is a pop-up that directs at-risk users —triggered by terms of self-harm or suicidal ideation—to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Google, on the other hand, has surprisingly not commented on the situation.
