🤩 OpenAI's New o1 Model!

OpenAI just unveiled the o1 model, the first in a new series of "reasoning" models designed to tackle complex questions faster than humans can.

And yes, this is the highly-anticipated Strawberry model.

But that's not all—a smaller, more affordable version called the o1-mini is also being released!

So, what can you expect from this new model?

o1 is better at writing code and solving multistep problems than previous models while also explaining its reasoning.

It was tested against a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, and while GPT-4o only correctly solved 13 percent of problems, o1 scored 83 percent.

And in online programming contests called Codeforces competitions, o1 climbed to the 89th percentile among participants.

OpenAI even boldly claims that the next update of this model will perform “similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology.”

Yet, it's important to note that o1 is not as capable as GPT-4o in many areas.

It doesn’t perform as well with factual knowledge about the world, and it lacks the ability to browse the web or process files and images.

Also, developer access to o1 is pricey!

In the API, o1-preview is priced at $15 per 1 million input tokens and $60 per 1 million output tokens, whereas GPT-4o costs $5 per 1 million input tokens and $15 per 1 million output tokens.

So, if you want to get in on this, you better get your coins ready!

Oh, and you should also know that the training behind o1 is fundamentally different from its predecessors.

While previous GPT models were taught to mimic patterns from their training data, o1 is trained to solve problems on its own using a technique known as reinforcement learning.

Interested?

ChatGPT Plus and Team users will have access to both o1-preview and o1-mini starting today, while Enterprise and Edu users will have access early next week.

As for ChatGPT's free users, OpenAI plans to add o1-mini access but hasn’t set a release date yet.
