🤑 Perplexity's New Ad Revenue Sharing Program for Publishers!

A few weeks back, Forbes and Wired caused quite a stir when they accused Perplexity's AI of plagiarizing their content.

But look at this - now Perplexity is rolling out a new ad-sharing program with publishers!

Under the program, partnered publishers will receive a share of the ad revenue whenever their content is used in any of Perplexity’s responses to user queries.

And that's not all!

  • Partnered publishers will also score a free one-year subscription to Perplexity’s Enterprise Pro tier.

  • Access to Perplexity’s developer tools, and

  • Insights through Scalepost.ai, an AI startup that provides data on things like how frequently a publisher’s articles appear in search queries.

Who might these partners be, you ask?

Initial partners include Time, Der Spiegel, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, and Automattic (with WordPress.com participating but not Tumblr).

As for the revenue share, the company has remained tight-lipped about the exact figures.

But Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity’s chief business officer, has said that it's a multiyear agreement with a "double-digit percentage" for all publishers, and payments will be made on a per-source basis.

Not bad, right?

Now, you must be wondering if this new program is just a quick fix in response to the plagiarism accusations.

But hey, that may not be the case!

The company claims it's been developing this program since January, long before the controversy hit the fan, and had even planned to launch it last month but decided to hold off until now.

Whether this is just good timing or strategic maneuvering to prevent lawsuits, your guess is as good as ours.🤷‍♀️

⚖️ Microsoft Demands Action on AI Deepfake Scams!

You know how the government usually calls out big companies, urging them to follow rules and regulations or mandating them to do this and that?

The tables have turned; this time, it's actually Microsoft making the demands!

But first, did you know that while there are laws against sexually-explicit deepfakes and robocalls, there's no comprehensive law against AI-generated scams and fraud?

Well, that's exactly what Microsoft's vice chair and president Brad Smith is calling on the Congress for!

He’s pushing Congress to put together a solid statute specifically targeting deepfake fraud.

Why?

Well, he wants law enforcement to have the necessary tools they need to go after these AI-generated scams and protect vulnerable groups like children and seniors.

He also emphasizes the urgency of updating the laws to cover AI-generated content related to issues like child sexual exploitation and non-consensual intimate imagery.

Even though Microsoft has been doing its part to defend against these AI attacks, Smith believes it's high time the government took action so that victims can seek justice and offenders don't get off scot-free.

But that's not all!

One of the key points Smith also made is the need for new rules requiring AI system providers to use top-notch technology to label synthetic content, which would provide transparency and trust.

In fact, this call for legislation is further highlighted by Elon Musk's recent deepfake post of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Clearly, Smith isn't asking for too much, especially with the 2024 election approaching.

The increasing ease with which fake content can be created is a real concern, and if the government doesn't act now, it might become too late.
