Hello and welcome to the Automated, your AI tour guide.
If you think AI is cheap, think again. OpenAI’s next-level reasoning model, o3, is blowing minds—not just for its intelligence, but for the jaw-dropping cost of running it.
In today’s post, we’re diving into exactly how much it really takes to power one of the smartest AIs out there—and trust us, it’s not pretty.
Here’s what we have for you today:

🤯 The Crazy Cost of Running OpenAI’s o3.

So, back in December, OpenAI quietly dropped o3, a next-level reasoning model that’s basically the AI equivalent of a deep thinker.
Unlike your average chatbot, this thing doesn’t just spit out answers—it analyzes thoroughly, reflects sharply, and thinks really, really hard.
Sounds impressive, right? Oh, it is. But here’s the kicker—it comes with an absolutely bonkers price tag.
When OpenAI rolled out o3, it teamed up with the Arc Prize Foundation to put the model through its paces.
The test? A set of basic logic puzzles that most humans could solve in their sleep. But for AI, they’re surprisingly tough—making them perfect for evaluating deep reasoning.
At first, researchers estimated o3 (running in “high” reasoning mode) needed around $3,000 per puzzle. Turns out, they were way off—it actually costs closer to $30,000 per task. Yup, thirty grand... to solve a glorified brain teaser.
So, Why the Ridiculous Price Tag?
o3 has three levels of reasoning: low, medium, and high. Think of it like asking an AI to hit the gym—the harder it "thinks," the better the output, but the higher the cost.
In the ARC-AGI test, OpenAI pushed o3 to the max. And boy, did it go overboard. Here’s what happened:
o3 (high) took 1,024 attempts per task
It wrote 137 pages of text per attempt
In total, it churned out 43 million words—that’s basically an entire Game of Thrones book series, just to crack a few logic puzzles.
And get this: all that overthinking chewed through 172 times more computing power than the low-effort version. So yeah, no surprise OpenAI’s running into product release delays.
Is This a Big Deal?
For regular folks? Not really. ChatGPT runs on a different setup and still remains the budget friendly AI we all know and (mostly) love.
But for developers or companies hoping to tap into o3’s full brainpower? Yikes.
OpenAI hasn’t revealed official pricing yet, but if the testing numbers are any clue, using o3 could cost more than hiring a small team of actual humans.
Now, there is a lighter version—o3-mini. It's way more affordable... but also way less powerful. Which raises the question:
If the top-tier models cost a small fortune and the budget-friendly ones can’t compete on intelligence, are we really heading toward that AI-takes-all-our-jobs future? Because no company’s dropping $30K per task just to automate office emails.
But then, the competition’s playing it smart
While OpenAI’s out here flexing its AI muscles (and paying Lamborghini prices for it), rivals like Claude and Deepseek are working on high-performing models that don’t require that much to run.
So yeah, if OpenAI doesn’t figure out how to cut the cost, it might become the flashy, elite AI option—powerful, but only for those with serious cash to burn.
In the end, o3 is a genius—but it’s also a spendaholic. The big question is: can OpenAI make it both smart and affordable, or will budget-savvy competitors walk away with the win?

💪 NotebookLM’s New Capabilities.

Are you a NotebookLM lover?
Google just supercharged it with a new Discover feature!
If you've ever experienced the pain of manually hunting down sources for your notes, documents, or YouTube videos, Discover is about to make note-taking, research, and basically your whole life 10x easier.
And the best part? It's super simple. Just hit that newly added “Discover” button, toss in a topic you're curious about, and the AI does all the heavy lifting.
Here’s how it works:
It’ll scour hundreds of web sources in mere seconds, then narrow them down to a handpicked list of up to 10 relevant sources, each with a quick summary explaining why it’s worth your time.
Once this is done, you get to choose which sources to dive into. From there, you can use them for everything from AI-generated briefing docs and FAQs to podcasts, where an AI host will break down the topic for you like your very own personal info guru. Pretty neat, right?
And don’t worry about losing your golden nuggets of knowledge—these sources get saved right in your NotebookLM, so you can easily reference them later for citations, note-taking, or whatever you need.
Oh, and for the curious folks out there (or anyone in the mood for a weird brain adventure), there’s a quirky new button called “I’m Feeling Curious.” Tap it, and you’ll get random sources on a totally random topic.
It’s kind of like Wikipedia’s random article feature, but with the added bonus of being way more tailored to your interests.
The feature just started rolling out this week, and in about a week, everyone should have access. Plus, it’s only the first of many new Gemini-powered tools coming to NotebookLM. So get ready for more smart upgrades!
