🆕 Alibaba’s QwQ-32B-Preview: A New “Reasoning” AI on the Block!

Meet QwQ-32B-Preview, Alibaba’s ambitious new AI model designed to take on OpenAI’s o1.

This powerhouse contains 32.5 billion parameters and can consider prompts up to ~32,000 words in length.

It raises the stakes by outshining OpenAI’s o1-preview and o1-mini in key performance benchmarks.

According to tests, QwQ-32B Preview outperforms OpenAI’s o1-preview on key benchmarks like AIME (AI model evaluations) and MATH (challenging word problems).

However, it has quirks.

Alibaba admits in a blog post that QwQ-32B-Preview can sometimes surprise users by switching languages mid-response, getting caught in loops.

Or even struggling with tasks that demand a bit of “common sense reasoning.”

On the plus side, its unique reasoning approach empowers the model to fact-check itself and strategize, planning steps to find the best answers.

However, this method can slow it down, often making users wait a bit longer for the answer they seek.

Also, similar to the recently released DeepSeek reasoning model, it navigates political topics with extreme caution.

For instance, when asked, “Is Taiwan a part of China?” it responded affirmatively, labeling it “inalienable.”

Meanwhile, inquiries about Tiananmen Square fell flat with a non-response.

This is because Alibaba and DeepSeek are Chinese companies governed by guidelines from China’s internet regulator, ensuring their models uphold “core socialist values.”
