🤯 Emails Reveal OpenAI’s Struggles in its Early Days!

Last week, we told you about the amended complaint in Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI.

While the allegations remain unproven for now, the case has exposed a batch of emails between Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others during OpenAI’s early days.

Here are some captivating insights from those emails:

One striking detail is that Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist, expressed serious concerns about Musk's desire for control, worrying that it might lead to an “AGI dictatorship.”

And guess what? He also voiced concerns about Sam Altman.

In fact, he used words similar to those the board would later use when accusing Altman of not being “consistently candid.”

Another fascinating nugget is that as early as 2017, OpenAI seriously considered buying chipmaker Cerebras or merging with it, potentially using Tesla’s resources.

Back then, Musk was keen on having OpenAI as one of his many properties, and the leadership seemed open to exploring that option, as noted by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy.

However, that never materialized, and the emails don’t reveal why.

Let’s not forget Microsoft’s involvement as early as 2016—they offered OpenAI a whopping $60 million worth of Azure compute in exchange for "evangelizing," among other things.

But this kind of corporate back-scratching didn’t sit well with anyone.

Musk himself described the arrangement as nauseating, later noting that it was worth far more than $50 million not to seem like Microsoft’s “marketing bitch.”

Ultimately, they paid much more but without any obligations from either side.

Plus, did you know Gabe Newell, founder of Valve, was an early investor?

Yup, board member Shivon Zilis mentioned that Newell was a donator to the project in its early days and was also on Altman and Greg Brockman’s “informal advisory board.

What’s the takeaway from all this?

OpenAI’s meteoric rise was anything but smooth. It seems that its journey has always been a mix of ambition, ethics, and drama.

🏈 ESPN Tests AI Avatar to Make Sports Analytics Fun!

ESPN is bringing AI to college football!

They’re testing an AI-generated avatar called FACTS, which will promote education and fun about sports analytics during the Saturday college football show SEC Nation.

The avatar will use information drawn from ESPN Analytics, which includes data like the Football Power Index (FPI), player and team statistics, and game schedules.

But that’s not all!

It utilizes cutting-edge technology from Nvidia’s Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE), an Azure OpenAI integration, to power language processing.

And tops it off with ElevenLabs for its text-to-speech capabilities.

Think of FACTS as a digital spin on Howie Schwab, ESPN’s first statistician and the star of Stump the Schwab, a game show from the mid-2000s.

But don’t worry—ESPN insists this isn’t about replacing human talent.

Instead, it’s a testbed for innovation, helping fans connect with ESPN Analytics’ data in an engaging and enjoyable segment.

So, when will this bad boy go live?

FACTS is still in development, and details on when it could debut on the network remain hush-hush for now.

But with AI-written game recaps already on ESPN’s website, it’s obvious that the network is doubling down on generative AI.
