📰 Meta's AI Chatbot Gets a News Upgrade!

Meta and Reuters are teaming up to bring more reliable news to Meta’s AI chatbot.
Under this multi-year deal, Meta’s AI chatbot will now be able to respond to users' news-related questions with summaries and links to Reuters content.
Starting Friday, US users can expect these valuable links to pop up.
Why is this a big deal, though?
Over the last year, we’ve seen a shift to an era where news outlets agree to provide their content to AI companies.
Major outlets like The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and the Dotdash Meredith group have signed licensing deals with OpenAI.
But this deal represents the first of its kind for Meta and offers its chabot users a more useful experience.
Instead of being used for just creative tasks, deep dives on new topics, or how-to assistance, it can now provide fact-based news content.
As good as all this may sound, not everyone’s on board with this new era.
The New York Times, for example, is locked in a costly legal battle with OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement.
And here’s an odd fact:
While Meta now seems ready to pay for news content, it’s also battling against laws that would require it to compensate publishers for their work on social media.
For example, if you live in Canada, you can’t access news on Facebook and Instagram because Meta chose to block all publisher accounts and links instead of paying up.
And they’re not alone in this.
Even Google threatened similar action in California, where a bill was proposed to pay media outlets.
The bill ultimately died, and news outlets and Google reached a $250 million partnership agreement.
❌ OpenAI Denies Orion Launch!

Remember OpenAI’s next big release, which is rumored to be called Orion?
Just last week, The Verge stirred things up, reporting that this mysterious “Orion” model—a supercharged version of GPT-4—was set to debut by December, with Microsoft getting an early sneak peek in November.
OpenAI has shut down on all that hype, saying it does not plan to launch anything called Orion this year.
If you’re wondering what all this Orion fuss is about, rumor has it the model might be trained on data from OpenAI’s reasoning model, “o1,” supposedly capable of tackling advanced problem-solving.
So, if Orion really exists, OpenAI could be brewing up some mind-bending fusion of logic and language like we haven’t seen before.
But hey, don’t get too bummed—they promise that “a lot of other great tech” is on the way, even though they’re staying quiet on the timelines.
OpenAI’s statement left just enough wiggle room for a plot twist.
Maybe we’ll still get some kind of model release soon, even if it isn’t this so-called Orion, or maybe Orion exists, but they’re saving it for next year’s big reveal.
Ultimately, it’s a classic OpenAI move—it leaves everyone guessing and keeps the AI crowd hanging on for more!
